It focuses on developing scenarios and strategic designs that address the future of Delft Municipality in four extreme scenarios. 2019 concept, coordination & management, tutoring Dutch Scenarios Resilience  Cities and regions all over the world are reinventing their positions; either driven by changes in national policies decentralizing governance or reacting to the reality of competition and collaboration on subjects such as economy, services or the changing number of inhabitants. This often originates from a desire or perceived necessity to respond to the changing ambitions of industries and citizens, as well as to global influences.  Due to the complex and intricate nature of upcoming challenges, there’s a need to improve decision-making and policy processes just as much as there’s a need to service and renew spatial structures as demands are changing. One can state that changes in urban developments are driven by changes in population and their needs. Energy and sustainability issues have become a common consciousness deserving appropriate response in terms of policy and spatial planning. One can easily add to these examples.   DESIGN THINKING These current challenges […]

It will run in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Turkey. Coordinating country Ireland will host the workshop for Laureates in Dublin, August 2014. Ranging from reduction of raw materials and optimizing energy flows, to wide spread computer aided production processes and increasing numbers of experts for each project, the field of architecture becomes more complex and needs to focus more on inventing smart and efficient systems. Combined with an exploding range of materials and techniques to chose from we often see a practice that is either strongly focused on iconic qualities of buildings, or on carefully engineered sets of performances and materials, fully rationalized and mainly functional. This competition seeks to investigate 'elegance' in architecture and concrete. Implicit Performance

Concrete Design Competition & Master Class on Implicit Performance Juan Herreros set the theme for the third Concrete Design Competition as 'Implicit Performance'. Students had to investigate the hidden properties and characteristics of concrete as a monolithic material as well as in hybrid structures. A quest for new performances and materials that led to a variety of extreme examples of techniques, materials and products. 2007 - 2008 concept, coordination & management, tutoring, publication Implicit Performance Documenting the Concrete Design Master Class on Implicit Performance led by curator Juan Herreros. Rotterdam Airport Scenarios

inter-disciplinary and inter-university scenario planning project on Rotterdam Airport and environs At Delft Technical University students researched and developed strategies for a 'new' Rotterdam Airport. Based on current political, spatial and economical trends the envisioned new program, positioning an ambitions for the changing regional airport. Simultaneously a group of students at SCI-Arc Los Angeles studied comparable regional airports in California. Results were shared during the process of investigation to stimulate collaboration and shared knowledge. The project culminated in a weeklong workshop in The netherlands were both groups presented and discussed. 2006 concept, coordination & management, tutoring project setup‘Rotterdam Airport Scenarios’ is a design / research project for international master students architecture at the Technical University Delft, faculty Architecture. The project investigates a complex urban / landscape area in which major developments concerning infrastructure, housing, industry and recreation are found in a mix with political, cultural and economical ambitions. Its aim is to generate a series of scenarios that unveil both the seemingly obvious as well as more obscure and exiting potentials for the area covering developments between Rotterdam and The Hague. The area is characterized by a broad variety of future developments that range form new railroad systems and structures (Randstad […]

plastic-Opacity

concrete design competition & master class on plastic-opacity Structural Engineer and director of Adams Kara Tayler, Hanif Kara, led the second cycle of the Concrete Design Competition under the theme plastic-OPACITY. He challenged the participants to explore a solid kind of transparency, in which the core properties of concrete being massive and moldable are exploited to generate a formal language that surpasses a solely heavy and dull 'traditional' experience of concrete. 2005 - 2006 concept, coordination & management, tutoring, publication cameraNicole van der Veldevideobureaubakker assignment‘concrete is as concrete doesn’t’ – MassumiRecent developments in concrete such as high strength concrete and self-compacting mixtures have improved its strength and processability. These new properties are bringing a different level of inspiration to architecture students and practitioners alike by generating new possibilities in themselves, which are much more than technical solutions to design ambitions whose motivations come from other sources. Already explorations of concrete’s inherent qualities such as mass, weight, density, strength and durability are leading to innovative applications. But new possibilities could open up an imaginative field if one could experiment with the degrees of opaqueness offered by concrete. If so, concrete would finally be able to add ‘transparency’ to its obvious plasticity, […]

ROBUSTNESS

Concrete Design Competition & Master Class on ROBUSTNESS The inaugural cycle of the Concrete Design Competition had as theme ROBUSTNESS. Curator Michael Speaks broadened the notion on ROBUSTNESS to one including flexibility and adaptability, next to sturdiness and resilience. He also added ideas on robust design practices as a means to achieve robust results. A notion that seamlessly extends the ambitions and format of the competition itself. 2003 - 2004 concept, coordination & management, tutoring, publication cameraOkke van den Broekvideobureaubakker assignmentIn this inaugural competition students are asked to submit architectural proposals that engender ROBUSTNESS in/with/through concrete. In order to encourage the most diverse and original designs possible, no predetermined design criteria will be given or stipulated. Submissions are not limited to any scale and can range from small architectural detail, to interior, to free-standing building to landscape proposals. It is expected, however, that all proposals rigorously examine and make use of the manifest and latent qualities of concrete often hidden from view by conventional thinking and normal application. Competition entries will not be judged by stylistic, programmatic, typological, formal or other architecture design criteria, but rather according to the innovative use of concrete to achieve a high degree of design […]

Or how can architectural objects enhance identities and feelings of belonging for clients, passer-bys, the city and the objects themselves.Ideas will be tested in models and finally in scale 1:1 objects, both made out of concrete. The tactile characteristics of the designs and how these influences the branding capacities will be the main focus besides of course formal, functional and contextual aspects. Branding operates on at least four levels. At the level of externals; shops, manufacturers, institutions, ideals, etc. At the level of the process, the making of, the experience, the context. At the level of the object concerning the temporary, material, tactility and form. And also at the level of the (end)user; giving stature to the passers-by, exhibiting the accidental engagement, facilitating unforeseen desires. It is not unlikely […]

Fondant Architecture

Blitz Beton Workshop 2001 - Fondant Architecture The scheme of the Blitz Beton Workshop 2001 was simple: design the missing plinth for the building of TENT.. An assignment that, similar to previous Blitz Beton assignements originates from the conviction that architecture has a strong ‘knowing through making’ component. By making with ones own hands the possibilities of the element becomes clear. With a length of 90 meters, a height of 1,75 meters, exposed to the scrutinizing glances of passer-bys from two streets and within the time limit of 6 days, we had the opportunity to test our proposition. 2001 concept, coordination & management, tutoring, publication Fondant Architecture Documenting the Blitz Beton Workshop Fondant Architecture.
