plastic-Opacity

concrete design competition & master class on plastic-opacity Structural Engineer and director of Adams Kara Tayler, Hanif Kara, led the second cycle of the Concrete Design Competition under the theme plastic-OPACITY. He challenged the participants to explore a solid kind of transparency, in which the core properties of concrete being massive and moldable are exploited to generate a formal language that surpasses a solely heavy and dull 'traditional' experience of concrete. 2005 - 2006 concept, coordination, tutoring, publication cameraNicole van der Veldevideobureaubakker assignment‘concrete is as concrete doesn’t’ – MassumiRecent developments in concrete such as high strength concrete and self-compacting mixtures have improved its strength and processability. These new properties are bringing a different level of inspiration to architecture students and practitioners alike by generating new possibilities in themselves, which are much more than technical solutions to design ambitions whose motivations come from other sources. Already explorations of concrete’s inherent qualities such as mass, weight, density, strength and durability are leading to innovative applications. But new possibilities could open up an imaginative field if one could experiment with the degrees of opaqueness offered by concrete. If so, concrete would finally be able to add ‘transparency’ to its obvious plasticity, combining the […]

ROBUSTNESS

Concrete Design Competition & Master Class on ROBUSTNESS The inaugural cycle of the Concrete Design Competition had as theme ROBUSTNESS. Curator Michael Speaks broadened the notion on ROBUSTNESS to one including flexibility and adaptability, next to sturdiness and resilience. He also added ideas on robust design practices as a means to achieve robust results. A notion that seamlessly extends the ambitions and format of the competition itself. 2003 - 2004 concept, coordination, tutoring, publication cameraOkke van den Broekvideobureaubakker assignmentIn this inaugural competition students are asked to submit architectural proposals that engender ROBUSTNESS in/with/through concrete. In order to encourage the most diverse and original designs possible, no predetermined design criteria will be given or stipulated. Submissions are not limited to any scale and can range from small architectural detail, to interior, to free-standing building to landscape proposals. It is expected, however, that all proposals rigorously examine and make use of the manifest and latent qualities of concrete often hidden from view by conventional thinking and normal application. Competition entries will not be judged by stylistic, programmatic, typological, formal or other architecture design criteria, but rather according to the innovative use of concrete to achieve a high degree of design excellence.ROBUSTNESS: ro·bust […]

Fondant Architecture

Blitz Beton Workshop 2001 - Fondant Architecture The scheme of the Blitz Beton Workshop 2001 was simple: design the missing plinth for the building of TENT.. An assignment that, similar to previous Blitz Beton assignements originates from the conviction that architecture has a strong ‘knowing through making’ component. By making with ones own hands the possibilities of the element becomes clear. With a length of 90 meters, a height of 1,75 meters, exposed to the scrutinizing glances of passer-bys from two streets and within the time limit of 6 days, we had the opportunity to test our proposition. 2001 concept, coordination, publication, tutoring Fondant Architecture Documenting the Blitz Beton Workshop Fondant Architecture.
