Elegance The sixth edition of the Concrete Design Competition will host the theme of 'Elegance - exploring intelligent solutions'. It will run in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Turkey. Coordinating country Ireland will host the workshop for Laureates in Dublin, August 2014. The competition will kick-off in September 2013, with deadlines for submitting entries in May 2014. 2013 - 2014 concept, coordination, tutoring, publication assignmentElegance1: a refined quality of gracefulness and good taste 2: a quality of neatness and ingenious simplicity in the solution of a problemThe contemporary architectural practice is challenged with a wide range of economical, environmental and social issues. Ranging from reduction of raw materials and optimizing energy flows, to wide spread computer aided production processes and increasing numbers of experts for each project, the field of architecture becomes more complex and needs to focus more on inventing smart and efficient systems. Combined with an exploding range of materials and techniques to chose from we often see a practice that is either strongly focused on iconic qualities of buildings, or on carefully engineered sets of performances and materials, fully rationalized and mainly functional. This competition seeks to investigate 'elegance' in architecture and concrete. One-day brainstorm session with designers, prefab concrete producers and experts leads to inventory of ambitions and understanding of each others disciplines. No idea is too outrageous, all ideas are seriously approached and developed, money and technique have to follow proposals for new concrete applications. After which prototypes are produced to test the ideas. 2004 concept, coordination, design, moderation, publication what you always wanted to do in concrete...Always wanted to know how to control corrosion of surfaces? And how to keep them aesthetical intriguing? Are there samples in architecture or art that keep puzzling you in terms of how they were created? Want to know if it is possible to generate formal or tactile ‘chance’ within a serial production method? Want to understand and manipulate existing production techniques and methods to push the envelope of the possible? Just having an outrageous idea? That you like to get tested for practical and economical feasibility?Unanswered questions, extreme applications and seemingly impossible ideas form the starting point of these Casestudies. How to realise ever further reaching fascinations and ambitions of architects and designers is the core of this initiative. These are Casestudies since ideas are not only […]

Camera Eye

transferring architecture to movies to concrete objects The Camera Eye project, for master students of the  Delft University of Technology - Architecture, researched film as a representational medium in architectural design practice. Our workshop took the storyboard and camera track proposals back into the realm of architecture. Transferring them into material objects. 2004 concept, coordination, tutoring camera eye research studio‘I’m an eye. A mechanical eye. I, the machine, show you a world the way only I can see it. I free myself for today and forever from human immobility. I’m in constant movement. I approach and pull away from objects. I creep under them. I move alongside a running horse’s mouth. I fall and rise with the falling and rising bodies. This is I, the machine, maneuvering the chaotic movements, recording one movement after another in the most complex combinations.Freed from the boundaries of time and space, I co-ordinate any and all points of the universe, wherever I want them to be. My way leads towards the creation of a fresh perception of the world. Thus I explain is a new way the world unknown to you.’(Dziga Vertov, 1923)Since Dziga Vertov’s kinoki team or ‘cinema-eye’ launched the journal Kino Pravda […]

Insomnio Parasites

music and architecture: interaction and inspiration 3-Day artists in residence workshop. The contemporary music ensemble Insomnio experimented with improvised music inspired by various spatial contexts. Colors, materials, architecture and acoustic qualities interacted with the mainly classical and contemporary music background of the musicians and composers. Insomnio explored their core values through confrontation with the experimental architecture of Parasites Paradis at Leidsche Rijn. 2003 concept, moderation tutors Idske Bakker, Siebe Bakker & Anne La Berge host Parasites Paradise, Leidsche Rijn Utrecht

Concrete Branding

Blitz Beton Workshop 2002 - Concrete Branding Investigation of the branding capacities of architectural objects. Or how can architectural objects enhance identities and feelings of belonging for clients, passer-bys, the city and the objects themselves. 2002 concept, coordination, publication, tutoring Your browser does not support the video tag. Concrete Branding 2002 / Dutch, EnglishDocumenting the Blitz Beton Workshop Concrete Branding. Rotterdam, August 2002editingSiebe Bakker film:Okke van den Broek & Maarten Veerman assignmentInvestigation of the branding capacities of architectural objects. Or how can architectural objects enhance identities and feelings of belonging for clients, passer-bys, the city and the objects themselves.Ideas will be tested in models and finally in scale 1:1 objects, both made out of concrete. The tactile characteristics of the designs and how these influences the branding capacities will be the main focus besides of course formal, functional and contextual aspects. Branding operates on at least four levels. At the level of externals; shops, manufacturers, institutions, ideals, etc. At the level of the process, the making of, the experience, the context. At the level of the object concerning the temporary, material, tactility and form. And also at the level of the (end)user; giving stature to the passers-by, exhibiting the accidental engagement, […]

Acoustic Concrete

exploring acoustic properties of concrete at academy of architecture amsterdam Hands-on workshop for students of the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam, investigating how specific acoustic properties of concrete objects generated through form, wind and touch can enhance certain spatial experiences. 2002 initiative, concept, coordination, tutoring tutors Siebe Bakker support ENCI - Hans Köhne host Academy of Architecture, Amsterdam

Fondant Architecture

Blitz Beton Workshop 2001 - Fondant Architecture The scheme of the Blitz Beton Workshop 2001 was simple: design the missing plinth for the building of TENT.. An assignment that, similar to previous Blitz Beton assignements originates from the conviction that architecture has a strong ‘knowing through making’ component. By making with ones own hands the possibilities of the element becomes clear. With a length of 90 meters, a height of 1,75 meters, exposed to the scrutinizing glances of passer-bys from two streets and within the time limit of 6 days, we had the opportunity to test our proposition. 2001 concept, coordination, publication, tutoring Your browser does not support the video tag. Rotterdam, August 2001film & editingErik Jutten & Core van der Hoeven The Ultimate Concrete ExperienceMaking concrete understood as an architectural material of great potential is the aim of the Blitz Beton Workshop series. The word 'blitz' can be associated with 'intense, energizing, and temporary'. Exactly the main elements of the Blitz Beton formula. A full week of learning by doing. Of high speed and high pressure, deriving inspiration in a joyful context. Working in an international atmosphere, with professional […]

Atmospherics

Blitz Beton Workshop 2000 - Atmospherics This workshop intends to investigate the so-called ‘ atmospherics in architecture’. And it is a Blitz Beton Workshop. An interesting combination of fundamental architectural research that has to be executed in scale one to one as architectural objects. In other words: the most direct way to verify assumptions that arise from theory and fascinations. 2000 consultancy, tutoring, publication Your browser does not support the video tag. An interesting combination of fundamental architectural research that has to be executed in scale one to one as architectural objects. In other words: the most direct way to verify assumptions that arise from theory and fascinations. And that is exactly the way this workshop will work. Jun Aoki’s introduction of the theme ‘atmospherics’ guaranties an intense exploration of our knowledge of, and assumptions about the basics of architecture. The fact that we really have to build the proposals gives us the necessary boundaries to avoid an endless series of […]
