It focuses on developing scenarios and strategic designs that address the future of Delft Municipality in four extreme scenarios. 2019 concept, coordination, initiative, publication, tutoring Dutch Scenarios Resilience  Cities and regions all over the world are reinventing their positions; either driven by changes in national policies decentralizing governance or reacting to the reality of competition and collaboration on subjects such as economy, services or the changing number of inhabitants. This often originates from a desire or perceived necessity to respond to the changing ambitions of industries and citizens, as well as to global influences.  Due to the complex and intricate nature of upcoming challenges, there’s a need to improve decision-making and policy processes just as much as there’s a need to service and renew spatial structures as demands are changing. One can state that changes in urban developments are driven by changes in population and their needs. Energy and sustainability issues have become a common consciousness deserving appropriate response in terms of policy and spatial planning. One can easily add to these examples.   DESIGN THINKING These current challenges […]

Research to Reality Book

Research to Reality Book 4TU.Bouw is the collaboration between the built environment related faculties of the four technical universities in the Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University & Research. Future challenges for the built environment, like scarcity of resources, climate change, accelerated population growth and demographic change, demand for joint strategies and action. 4TU.Bouw aims to promote collaboration between the universities, industrial partners and the government, in order to meet these grand challenges ahead. This book presents an overview of the four-year period from 2014 to 2017. Around 350 researchers and students from the faculties affiliated with 4TU.bouw, worked with at least 300 experts from other faculties, industries, market parties and governments on a range of collaborative research projects, match-making events, and investigative workshops and conferences. Four years of 4TU.Bouw, led by Scientific Director Ulrich Knaack. 2018 concept, coordination, design, publication IntroductionMost of the more persistent man-made structural assets that surround us in everyday life as well as their reliable structural services are normally taken ‘as a law of nature’ by the general public. Bridges with a structural failure rate comparable to that of normal office printers would be considered completely unacceptable, while a tunnel would never be built if they had a service life […]

Research to Reality Conference

Research to Reality Conference On November 30 the first Research to Reality Conference was held at the New Institute in Rotterdam. Researchers from the four universities debated on future ambitions and urgencies. Based on their expertise in previous research projects four themes were discussed; Smart Cities, Energy Transition, Circular, and Resilience. These four themes are generally acknowledged to become serious topics for the next decade. It only seems prudent to start debating the positions and potentials of the universities on how to respond, prepare and lead. During the second part of the conference, sixteen teams pitched to an academic and industry audience for Lighthouse Projects 2017 funding. Eight teams were awarded and will develop a 'proof of concept; or 'proof of failure' before the end of 2017. Seven researchers pitched for funding or collaboration on products and ideas that have reached the 'proof of concept' stage. They want to take their results to an entrepreneurial level. Two companies presented their research questions calling for researchers to team up and take on their challenges. Research to Reality is an initiative to combine the worlds of academics and industry. To initiate and facilitate meaningful collaborations. To set the stage for joint ambitions […]

Fabric Formwork Concrete Columns

Fabric Formwork Concrete Columns - Tektoniek workshop TU/e fall 2015 Hands-on concrete workshop for architecture and structural engineering students at Eindhoven University of Technology. A combination of Evolutionary Structural Optimization and Fabric Formwork techniques is developed and tested. 2015 concept, coordination, tutoring Investigating ‘hands-on’ innovative formwork techniques and design tools.Within the concrete industry several trends arise addressing topics related to environmental issues, production optimization and design driven ambitions. In the field of material research and development one can state that laboratory ready inventions are years ahead of what the industry can actually apply at this moment. At the same time one of the main ‘bottlenecks’ in developing new products seems to be the available formwork techniques. Computer driven milling and cutting practices are well-known and necessary to cater to certain formal needs, but are limited in usage due to relative costs and environmental considerations. Recent research into predictability of deformation of fabric formwork seems to open this specific technique to more precise production methods, and therefor promises to become a viable economic alternative. More design driven and production testing is needed to explore this potential. How to design the formwork – patterns, shapes, templates, effects on textures – fabric types […]

Core and fundamental research, free from any ‘outside’ influences and driven by inspired and ambitious researchers or research programs is well-known and methods of conduct, analysis of results and the results themselves are solidly engrained in peer-reviews, financial systems and academic award systems. However, we see a growing need for innovation within the built environment industry. Traditionally a craftsmanship world with seemingly many obstacles for this industry […]

de toekomst wordt gebouwd

de toekomst wordt gebouwd: Dutch National Science Agenda In reaction to the public call to present the government with relevant and urgent topics for future academic research, an inventory was made in the built environment faculties of the 3 technical universities in the Netherlands.

It focuses on developing scenarios and strategic designs that address the future of Delft Municipality in five extreme scenarios. 2015 concept, coordination, initiative, tutoring, publication DELFT2050Design thinking Cities all over the world are reinventing their positions, either driven by changes in national policies decentralizing governance or reacting to the reality of competition and collaboration on subjects such as economy, services or the changing number of inhabitants. Often this is generated out of a desire or perceived necessity to respond to the changing ambitions of industries and citizens. One only has to think of notions like ‘Creative Cities’, ‘Metropolitan Regions’, ‘City Branding’ and ‘Self-regulation’ to understand that traditional ways to organize one’s community will fail to adequately address these emerging ambitions. There is a need to improve decision-making and policy processes just as much as there is a need to service and renew spatial structures as demands are changing. One can state that changes in urban developments are driven by changes in population and their needs. Energy and sustainability issues have become a common consciousness deserving appropriate response in terms of policy and spatial planning. One can easily add to these examples. These current challenges are becoming more complex and interwoven. Fed by a […]

Warmbeton SU

warmbeton su Hands-on workshop for architecture students of Syracuse University. Based on the material porperties of insulating, load-bearing, ultra-lightweight concrete, its architectural potential is investigated. 2015 concept, initiative, tutoring Workshop Warmbeton Syracuse UniversityMany architects seem to look back with envy towards their illustrious predecessors from the early 20th century like Felix Candela, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. The main topic of their envy turns out to be the possibility to truly built monolithic. Nowadays made virtual impossible due to environmentally driven building physics requirements, labor costs combined with traditional formwork technologies and a wide-spread negative perception of weathering of fair faced concrete. However, the idea to be able to build in one material still evokes as almost magical attraction.  Notwithstanding the inability for those captured by this ambition to work monolithic to explain their desire – one material may lead to one detail, ‘one’ is beautiful in and by itself, simple is better, less is more, and so on – there are in fact more objective arguments available as well. Due to increasing insulation demands and due to a more and more structured building process, various materials have surfaced for various specific tasks. Concrete for structural requirements, foam and mineral […]

It will run in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Turkey. Coordinating country Ireland will host the workshop for Laureates in Dublin, August 2014. The competition will kick-off in September 2013, with deadlines for submitting entries in May 2014. 2013 - 2014 concept, coordination, tutoring, publication assignmentElegance1: a refined quality of gracefulness and good taste 2: a quality of neatness and ingenious simplicity in the solution of a problemThe contemporary architectural practice is challenged with a wide range of economical, environmental and social issues. Ranging from reduction of raw materials and optimizing energy flows, to wide spread computer aided production processes and increasing numbers of experts for each project, the field of architecture becomes more complex and needs to focus more on inventing smart and efficient systems. Combined with an exploding range of materials and techniques to chose from we often see a practice that is either strongly focused on iconic qualities of buildings, or on carefully engineered sets of performances and materials, fully rationalized and mainly functional. This competition seeks to investigate 'elegance' in architecture and concrete.
